"Imagine what Bonfire Night must be like for our pets - we know why there are lots of bangs and flashes outside, but our pets don't, which can be very distressing for them. But there are lots of things owners can do to help minimise pets suffering…….”

Follow these Clipsley tips to keeping your pets safe and happy this bonfire night.

Plan Ahead - A week or two before Bonfire Night

• • Keep your pets indoors and avoid walking them after dusk, when fireworks are likely to be let off.

Make sure your pet has a collar with an up to date ID tag, or is microchipped, so that if they do run away they can be identified.

Buy a Dog Calming remedy or food supplements and start to use 1 - 2 weeks before.  Natural remedies are best and do help to reduce stress levels in dogs and cats.  But DO NOT rely on these alone, follow our tips as well for the best stress-free effect.

Provide your pet with a “safe house” such as a cosy den full of blankets with favourite toys - drape a blanket over a table for a dog to hide underneath, or place a box on top of a wardrobe for a cat to hide.

• 
  
• Make sure your pet sees this den as a safe house by providing treats while he is in there and making sure he generally associates it with nice things.
• 
  
• Treat your pet to a new toy, but save it especially for Bonfire night.  Some tasty treats will also help to create good associations with this time of year.
• 
  
• Ask neighbours to warn you in advance of any private displays
• 
  
• If your neighbours have pets, let them know if you are planning a display yourself

The Bonfire Night Weekend (parties are likely all weekend)

Comfortable, Safe Surroundings 

• Fasten all doors and windows. Keep curtains shut to reduce the noise, bright lights and flashes from outside.
• 
  
• Keep some rooms light and some dark so your pet can choose a place he feels safest. Pets have sensitive ears, so play music or switch on the television to drown out noise from fireworks
• 
  
• Make sure your pet can access his “safe house” at all times

Lead by Example - Remain Calm

• Act normally and ignore the fireworks to help keep pets calm - Your pet will mirror your attitude.
• 
  
• Don’t be tempted to reassure and comfort your pets, especially dogs. Instead behave normally and be upbeat so that your pet sees there is nothing to be afraid of.  Reassuring them will reinforce their fear and teach them that it is the correct response

Tire Them Out

• Exercise your dog well during the day to ensure it is tired and ready to sleep in the evening.  If your dog is physically and mentally tired out, they will be much more likely to settle in the evening and so less likely to worry about the noise, lights and activity outside.

Distract Your Pets

• Take the focus away from the fireworks - play music; play a game with your dog - just keep him busy. Give them the new toy saved especially for Bonfire night. Tasty treats will also help.

Give them Comfort Food & Plenty of Water

• Some dogs benefit from being fed a high carbohydrate meal (such as well-cooked rice or pasta) which will help them to feel sleepier that evening.  Don’t forget to top up your dog's water because an anxious dog may be more thirsty than usual.

Small Pets, Horses and Livestock

• Small pets living outside must not be forgotten - rabbits and guinea pigs can be stressed by loud noises. Bring them indoors, or into the garden shed, or partly cover them with blankets so that one area of their home is well sound-proofed.
• 
  
• Horses and livestock should be properly stabled during Bonfire Night celebrations and fireworks should not be set off too close..

Wildlife

• Remember it's not just your pets you should look out for.  Hedgehogs and other small animals will often hide within the sticks and wood that makes up the bonfire piles.
• 
  
• Try to search the pile, and scare out any small animals that might be living there before setting it on fire. Rustling the branches with a stick, and making loud noises should be enough to flush wild animals out.

World Animal Day 4th October 2011

Do something special for your pets. 

Give your pet a special hug, treat them to something special – make this their special day!!

World Animal Dayis an annual event, held each year on 4^th October as a special celebration of the relationship between man and his animal friends.

World Animal Day is thought to have originated in Italy in 1931 during a convention of ecologists. And the 4th of October was chosen for World Animal Day as it is the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi -- a true lover of nature and the patron saint of animals. 

To this day many churches throughout the world observe the Sunday closest to 4^th October with a Blessing for the Animals.

World Animal Day is however observed by pet-lovers of all faiths and nationalities. During World Animal Day, many pet rescue shelters also host fundraising events. Wildlife groups educate kids and adults alike, and students are given projects related to the respect and appreciation of animals. 

Speaking about World Animal Day 2011, UK World Animal Day Ambassador Ryan O Meara said:

"Every day of every year animals have such a positive impact on the lives of millions of people.  By dedicating a special day to honour that magical relationship, to organise events and to do whatever we can to help raise awareness about various animal welfare concerns, wherever they may be, is a wonderful way for us to commemorate our animal friends.  World Animal Day is something I continue to be exceptionally proud to be associated with."

 If it's too late to get involved with World Animal Day events this year, why not put it in your diary now for next year??

You can of course still have your own event with your pets.  Make it a special day, even week, for them.  

Show your pets that you appreciate and love them ...........

• You know how much you love a hug, well so do they. 
• Have that special walk together or take that trip out that you planned, but never got around to doing. 
• Treat them to something special, what ever that may be - a chewy tasty treat,  a new toy for your dog, or something for your rabbit or small pet

One of the things we pride ourselves on at Clipsley Pets and Aquatics is our involvement in the local community. One of our community activities is in supporting animal and pet welfare, so when we were asked to support a one-off day to generate much-needed funds for a local charity, we jumped at the opportunity!

We spent a beautiful day in the  wonderful open surroundings of Delph Farm in Warrington along with a whole bunch of other like-minded people who were also there to raise funds for our favourite local pet rescue charity Paws 'n' Claws Rescue, and have some fun at the same time.

We have had a long-standing relationship with Paws 'n' Claws Rescue because this great local charity is dedicated to the rescue of all animals, small or large, old or young.  The fund-raising day came about because they stick to their principles of never turning away sick animals, despite it sometimes meaning expensive vet bills that can quickly exhaust funds.

The organiser of the day, Martine Taylor, found a cat, who was so sick it clearly needed emergency treatment. Unfortunately her pleas for help from some of the larger, well-known rescue organisations, drew no response. The Paws 'n' Claws response was to give Martine the name of their local vet and told her to have any costs charged to their account.  

Martine was so impressed with the help she was offered that she was determined to return the favour. Using her contacts, she set up a charity horse show at Delph Farm that drew horses, competitors and spectators from miles around to show their support.

The whole day was a great success, raising a fantastic total of £1,800 to help make sure that Paws 'n' Claws can continue to carry out its excellent work with animals in need.

Debbie Pilling of Paws n Claws Rescue said, "Sunday was a great success - much, much better than we could have hoped for and I'd like to thank everybody who came along to support us. Our special thanks go to Martine Taylor and the Taylor Show Team who arranged the whole day, and Dave Jones who provided the fantastic Delph Farm venue!!!"

Here at Clipsley Pets & Aquatics, we're making a RAW-fully big deal out of Rabbit Awareness Week!  Sorry, I couldn't help myself... 

The guys here have been hinting that Rabbits haven’t been getting a very good press lately (well no press at all really), so we are trying to put some of that right, by doing some rabbit themed stuff in our Clipsley Lane store.

Rabbit Awareness Week's focus is to 'raise awareness of rabbits’ emotional welfare needs by encouraging owners to consider their rabbit's mental and emotional health'.

Now I know it's easy - and totally understandable - to think that rabbits are happy enough with some hay, a hutch and a little food and drink. But, trust us, our favourite furry friends need just a bit more than that to live a happy, fulfilling life.  

We work hard every day with our animals at Clipsley to make sure they get the right kind of stimulation, personal care and companionship while they are with us.  We also try to make sure that all new owners appreciate their new pet's needs.

This week we have been giving visitors to the store the opportunity to learn more about rabbits, caring for a rabbit and understanding all its needs. 

* Rabbit Care Advice * - Individual advice to owners on rabbit Health, Stimulation and Hygiene.

* Best Bunny photo competition * -  a bit of fun, but with seriously good prizes that fit the RAW theme.  We’ve been asking customers to email us at admin@clipsleypetshop.co.uk with their favourite bunny photo, or post it on Facebook, or just bring it in store - whatever's easiest.

* Bunny Trivia Quiz * - kids love rabbits and this is a fun and educational competition for our young (and young at heart) customers, with all the answers easy to find in store.  And, while it's half-term next week we are even extending our competitions to make sure the kids (and mum & dad) get the chance to have some fun.

* Special offers, FREE samples and more! * - to help our customers on their next step to making their bunny, an all round, healthier, happier bunny

TV Vet and RAW supporter, Matt Brash, says "This May, the focus is on raising awareness of rabbits' emotional welfare needs by encouraging owners to consider their rabbit's mental and emotional health.

Unhappy rabbits that are bored, frustrated or frightened tend to develop behavioural problems, such as aggression, depression, self-harming, hiding or decreased grooming"

To help prevent your rabbit from developing some of these problems, ask yourself a couple of quick questions today;

*Does your bunny have plenty of rabbit toys to keep stimulated enough to ward off boredom? 

*Are you providing rabbit food that is high in fibre?  This is the most incredibly important part of any diet for keeping bunnies healthy.

Help us to make a special effort this year to ensure that "Rabbits DON'T Get a Raw Deal" 

If you have any concerns about your fluffy best friend's health and you've been putting off a trip to the vet (I really hate them too), vet surgeries all over the country are also carrying FREE rabbit health checks or clinics throughout Rabbit Awareness Week.

Hooray - I DID IT! OK, so maybe the other staff helped a little bit, but the important thing is that Clipsley Pets & Aquatics have been awarded the title, 'Assured Pet Specialist' by the nationally recognised body, Pet Care Trust! And, as if that isn't enough to have us barking with joy, we are the ONLY pet shop in the whole of the North West to receive this award! Now, if you excuse me while I gloat a little...

What a great photo! Glorious sunshine, a great award and, of course, a gorgeous picture of me! 

After 25 years of pet care, Paul, Karon and the rest of the team were thrilled to be recognised for all their hard work and - while I haven't been here quite as long as they have - I was more than happy to join in the celebrations! Pass that doggie chocolate!...

The award is only given to those that meet the Trust's high standards and provide customers with expert impartial advice, great customer service and a winning smile (I offer training classes to all the staff on that last bit...). So, you know that when you shop with us, you shop with the best! 

In order for us to receive the award, the Pet Care Trust had to consider all aspects of the store and our level of animal care. It was a thorough examination but we still passed... by 100%!! *Insert a little more gloating here...*

The Pet Care Trust were totally impressed with our animal welfare and housing, as well as our promise to only ever buy from reputable breeders. So, you can be sure that our animals will always get the best possible start in life and will join you - their new family - fit, healthy and happy. Just like me!

No, Clipsley fans, it's not what you think! Your lovely Ruby is still as lovely as ever - but I am seeing red...NOSES! That's right, here at Clipsley HQ, we're celebrating Red Nose Day in a BIG way!

It all began last week when something called a Red Nose Day Fundraising Kit landed on our doormat while I was trying to have a little snooze. Pfft. Paul explained to me that the pack had lots of fun ideas and props to help raise money for Red Nose Day. Great, I thought, but what the wag's tail is Red Nose Day?! Now, I know I'm wise beyond by years (well, months, actually - I'm not even 1 yet!), but I needed some help getting my gorgeous little head around this thing, so Paul and Karon explained everything to me. So, after finding out all there is to know about Red Nose Day - or Comic Relief as it's also known - I decided that it was a VERY worthy cause and that I was going to put all my puppy might into helping Clipsley Pets & Aquatics raise as much money as they could for good old RND. Unfortunately, the Clipsley Team weren't head over heels about my first idea. Take a look below...

So, after lots of deliberation (and maybe a few OTT attempts on my part...), we all decided that, here at Clipsley Pets & Aquatics, 14th-18th March will be Red Nose Week! That's right! And there's loads of fun and mayhem in-store with competitions to enter, fab prizes to be won and, of course, lots of lovely wonga being raised for Red Nose Day! Forget London 2012 and Crufts! Your very own Ruby is a medal winner!

That's right, I'm pleased (and more than just a little bit proud) to announce that all of my hard(ish) work in puppy training class has paid off and, thanks to The Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme, I have now passed 'The Puppy Foundation Assessment' and got myself a fancy certificate and gorgeous rosette to show for it! Take a look at the pics below - isn't the rosette great?! Purple is SO my colour...

Now, if you take a look at my puppy training video from a few weeks back, you'll see that maybe I wasn't the BEST puppy pupil, and maybe I was more interested in all the handsome boy puppies, but Karon and Paul think I've come on in puppy leaps and bounds! AND I've felt extra grown up this week as I lost my first puppy tooth! Such a shame that Karon sat on it when she was about to have a nice cuppa... Anyway, take a look at all the fun things me, Paul and Karon have learned;

Swoon! Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, I, Princess Ruby Clipsley, have fallen in love!! And just in time for Valentine's Day! Take a look at Jake - a working dog wonder! What a handsome thing, he is!

Now, let me to tell you how it all began...

At the start of the week, I was feeling a little down in the dumps about February 14th - who would I send a Valentine to? Paul, Karon and all my friends here at Clipsley HQ show me lots of love and - like a true puppy princess - I get lots of attention, but who would be my Valentine? 

Then there was Jake! Jake's owner, Mr Hudson, is a Clipsley Pets & Aquatics Reward Card Holder and he often pops instore to pick up dog treats for Jake - but, this week, he had a treat for us - a lovely picture of Jake playing in the sea! Don't you think he looks like he's walking on water?! What a guy! One look at his picture and I was one smitten kitten! Or puppy, rather! Mr Hudson's best pal keeps fit and healthy as a working dog but, here, he was taking some time out to enjoy himself - what a hunk! 

So, now, I'm super excited to send him a Valentine - but sshhh! Don't tell him who his secret admirer is! This is between you and me! 

Now, since this is definitely the most romantic week of the year, I thought I'd spread the love a little by encouraging all of my friends to invest in a little 'love nest' or nest box for winter's wild birds. Whilst a lot of us will be thinking about Valentine's Day this week, the 14th of February also sees the official start of Nest Box Week - the time of year to remind ourselves that there are lots of wild birds out there that need our help. From Blue Tits to Barn Owls, help provide them with a love nest of their own - right in your very own garden. Why not pop in some wild bird seed too and make sure that you're not the only one sitting down to a slap-up meal on V.Day? And you'll be pleased to know that you don't need to spend a fortune - take a look at the great sites below for lots more information. Or why not have a go at making your own? I'm certainly going to give it a try - although I might need a little help from Paul and Karon!

Phew! What a busy week! Between my puppy training classes, working hard on the Clipsley website and just generally being adorable (which is a LOT of hard work, I promise), we now have a temporary new addition to the Clipsley family - 2 fostered chickens - which means I've had to be even more adorable just to make sure those chickens know who's the princess around here...

Paul and Karon fostered the birds when a local family was moving out of the area and needed to have the chickens re-homed. And, by now, you should know that we love a pet or two around here (as long as they're not cuter than me), so we were happy to welcome the chickens into the Clipsley family until they could be re-homed. The chickens, one a Bluebell breed and the other a Light Sussex, have been lucky enough to be the first visitors to our brand new Chicken Boarding Suite and you can see by the pictures that they're living it up in a pretty luxurious pen! I must admit, I was a little nervous about the chickens at first - hey, give me a break, I'm only a puppy! - but once Paul and Karon calmed me down and made me feel nice and safe, I soon made friends with them. After all, us chicks have got to stick together! 

And re-homing the chickens has been easy - Julie, one of our lovely members of staff, is getting ready to take them home with her! With an already huge menagerie at home, Julie is excited to add two more chickens to her animal family. And, since my new pals aren't going far, I can go and visit them whenever I like!

Hi, I'm Ruby! I'm a 16 week old cross-breed puppy and ever since my lovely owners, Paul & Karon - who are the big bosses here at Clipsley Pets & Aquatics - rescued me from Paws n Claws Rescue Centre in St Helens when I was just 8 weeks old, I've been itching to get my paws dirty at the Clipsley HQ. Now, after weeks of training and studying - or, rather, causing lots of mess and commotion - Paul and Karon have let me sink my teeth into working on the Clipsley website's official blog! Although, I must admit, it doesn't taste as great as sinking my teeth into Karon's pretty shoes! Hmm, maybe I should try one of these instead...

So, every week I'll be here letting you know about all things Clipsley. That includes lots of information on how to keep your pet healthy and happy, fun stories about things that are happening here at Clipsley HQ, my adventures (I may only be a puppy, but this princess gets around!) and, not forgetting, exclusive offers, sales and everything else you've come to expect from Clipsley Pets & Aquatics over the last 25 years. As it's my first week here, I thought and thought about how I could really kick things off with a bang. I scratched my head, I wagged my tail, and then BANG! A little light bulb switched on in my head - I was more excited than when the postman arrives!
